Where does the name ‘Garnwerd aan Zee’ come from?

Our restaurant is situated by the water, but not by the sea. So where does the name Garnwerd aan Zee come from? Our name pays tribute to the past, when, until 1877, the water flowing past here was still subject to the tides and was a busy shipping route for merchant and fishing vessels. Nowadays, it’s still possible to sail through the Reitdiep, but it’s no longer a trade route for ships.
